What is Mercury retrograde?
A retrograde is an apparent reversal, not a real one. Mercury keeps orbiting the Sun in the same direction throughout; seen from a moving Earth, it traces a backward loop against the fixed stars for a few weeks before resuming.
What actually changes
The two moments that bracket that loop are called stations — the instant the apparent motion stops and turns. They are the most confidently datable events in transit astrology, because a station is a sign change in speed rather than a matter of interpretation. Everything on this page is measured from those two instants.
It is worth being precise about what does and does not change. The planet’s orbit is unaffected; so is its distance, its brightness and everything else physical. What changes is the direction it appears to travel against the background stars, as seen from here. Astrology has always built on that appearance rather than denying it — the symbolism of a planet retracing ground it has already covered is a statement about perspective, which is exactly what the geometry describes.
Why that distinction matters here
This matters for reading any calendar of retrogrades, including this one. The dates are astronomical facts and can be checked against any ephemeris. What those dates are taken to mean is interpretation, and the two should not be presented as though they carried the same kind of authority.
What the shadow period actually is
How the shadow is defined
Because the planet turns around, it covers the same stretch of zodiac three times: forward, backward, then forward again. The shadow is simply the first and third pass. The pre-retrograde shadow begins when the planet first reaches the degree it will later station direct at, and the post-retrograde shadow ends when it climbs back to the degree it originally turned from.
This is why the shadow dates are not extra symbolism layered on top. They fall out of the geometry, and you can check them against any ephemeris.
It makes the period twice as long
The practical consequence is that a retrograde is longer than it looks. By the time the planet finally clears the degree it first turned back from, it has spent roughly twice the headline duration inside the same stretch of zodiac. Anything begun in the pre-shadow tends to come back around during the retrograde proper, and to settle only once the post-shadow closes — which is why the four dates on this page are more useful than the two most sites publish.
The shadow is also the least mystical part of the whole subject, which is why it is worth understanding first. There is no judgement involved in locating it: you take the degree of each station and ask when the planet crossed it. Two lookups, no interpretation. If a source gives you shadow dates that do not line up with the station degrees it publishes, one of the two is wrong.
How these dates are calculated
Finding a station
Positions come from astronomy-engine, an open-source ephemeris, computed geocentrically — the frame astrology uses. To find a station we sample the planet's speed coarsely to bracket the moment it changes sign, then bisect inside that bracket down to the second. Speed itself is measured symmetrically around each instant rather than forward from it, which sounds like a detail and is not: a forward difference reports the speed of half a day later, and it moved two of the six 2026 Mercury stations onto the wrong calendar day until we fixed it.

Two places this usually goes wrong
Two details are worth stating because they are the usual sources of error elsewhere. The first is the coordinate frame: the same ephemeris library will happily return heliocentric longitudes, which are a different quantity and in which retrograde motion does not exist at all — seen from the Sun, no planet ever appears to reverse. The second is that a retrograde planet crosses the same degree up to three times, so any search that assumes one crossing per degree will silently return whichever it happens to find first.
Why Mercury retrograde happens three times a year
Mercury orbits the Sun in about 88 days, so from Earth it laps us roughly every 116 days — the synodic period. A retrograde happens near the middle of each lap, when Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun and briefly appears to run backwards against the stars. Three or four of those fit into a calendar year, which is why Mercury retrograde is a recurring feature of the year rather than an occasional event.
That frequency is worth keeping in proportion. Mercury is retrograde about 19% of the time — a little under one day in five — measured across 2000 to 2050. A Mercury retrograde is a phenomenon that occupies a fifth of your life is a background condition, not a crisis, and treating each occurrence as a special warning is hard to square with how often it arrives.
Mercury retrograde moves through the elements in a cycle
Because the synodic period and the zodiac do not divide evenly, consecutive Mercury retrograde periods land about 115° apart — close to the 120° that separates signs of the same element. The result is that a year’s retrogrades tend to fall in the same element, and the element shifts every few years. This is a genuine pattern in the geometry rather than a piece of received tradition, and you can check it against the table below.

Transition years
Transition years are the interesting ones. In 2024 and 2029 the retrogrades split across two elements as the pattern slips, and in the settled years — 2025 in fire, 2026 and 2027 in water, 2028 in air — all three fall in the same one. If you follow the symbolism, that means the theme of a Mercury retrograde year is fairly consistent within itself and changes noticeably between phases of the cycle.
It also gives a concrete reason to look at more than one year at a time, which is what the year links further down this page are for. A single Mercury retrograde read in isolation loses the fact that it is the second of three in the same element, or the first after a shift.
One caution about the pattern: it is a tendency of the geometry, not a law. The 115° step is close to 120° but not equal to it, so the alignment drifts and eventually breaks — which is exactly what a transition year is. Any source presenting the element cycle as fixed has stopped checking it against the ephemeris.
The cazimi: the Sun at the centre of every Mercury retrograde
Halfway through each Mercury retrograde, Mercury passes directly between Earth and the Sun. Astronomically this is the inferior conjunction, and it is not a coincidence that sits inside the retrograde — it is the reason the retrograde happens. Mercury only appears to reverse while it overtakes us on the inside of its orbit, and the moment it draws level is the middle of that overtaking.
Traditional astrology calls the exact conjunction the cazimi, from an Arabic term for the heart of the Sun, and treats it as the turning point of the whole cycle rather than as an affliction. Whatever you make of the symbolism, the geometry gives it a clean definition: it is the single instant when Mercury and the Sun share a degree of longitude. Why it is not the midpoint
It is worth computing rather than estimating, because it is not the midpoint. The retrograde arc is not symmetric around the conjunction — Mercury spends slightly different lengths of time either side — so the cazimi lands up to two days off the halfway mark between the stations. Splitting the difference between the two station dates gets you close and gets you the wrong day, which is the sort of error that is invisible until someone checks.
Every planet has one
The same alignment exists for every other retrograding body, with the geometry reversed. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are further out than Earth, so we overtake them rather than the other way round, and the middle of their retrograde is the opposition — the planet directly opposite the Sun, and therefore visible all night and at its brightest. How retrograde motion was explained before it was understood
Recorded long before it was explained
Babylonian astronomers were tracking Mercury’s stations by the seventh century BCE, centuries before anyone proposed a mechanism. They did not need one: the stations are observable, they recur on a schedule, and a schedule can be tabulated and predicted. Much of what we now call ancient astronomy is exactly this — extremely careful bookkeeping of repeating appearances, accurate enough to be useful without any model of what was moving.
Ptolemy, then Copernicus
The Greek tradition tried to explain the loops rather than only record them, and had to work hard, because it assumed Earth stood still. Ptolemy’s epicycles — smaller circles carried around on larger ones — reproduce retrograde motion accurately, which is why the model survived for fourteen centuries. It was not stupid. It was a correct description of the appearances built on a wrong assumption about the arrangement.
Copernicus removed the need for the epicycles by moving Earth. Once both bodies orbit the Sun, the loop is just parallax: the shifting line of sight as one moving observer overtakes another. Retrograde motion went from being the hardest thing to explain to being one of the strongest arguments for the new arrangement, because heliocentrism predicts exactly when it should occur and how long it should last.
That history matters for reading a page like this one. The dates on it are the same dates the Babylonians tabulated and the same ones Ptolemy modelled; what changed is the account of why. Astrology kept the symbolism attached to the appearance, which is a defensible thing to do as long as nobody claims the appearance is a physical reversal. This page keeps the two separate on purpose.
A short checklist for a Mercury retrograde
Nothing here requires believing anything about planets. It is what the symbolism recommends, stated as scheduling, and it costs almost nothing if the symbolism is empty.
1Before the station
Finish or firm up what is already moving. The pre-shadow is the last stretch of unambiguously forward motion, and things settled now are less likely to be reopened.
2During the retrograde
Favour work that is genuinely revision — editing, auditing, reconnecting, finishing the thing you abandoned in March. Read anything binding twice, and leave a day of margin around anything you cannot easily redo.
3After the direct station
Do not treat the direct station as an all-clear. Mercury is still inside the shadow and covering ground for the third time; the post-shadow date in the table is when the arc actually closes.
Read that way, a Mercury retrograde is closer to a change of season than to a warning. It arrives on a schedule you can look up years in advance, it lasts about three weeks, and it does the same thing every time. The dates on this page are exact so that you can plan around them if you want to — not so that you have something to dread three times a year.
Three claims worth separating from the dates
A Mercury retrograde attracts more folklore than any other transit, and most of it is stated with more confidence than the underlying astrology supports. Three claims come up constantly:
- “Technology fails during Mercury retrograde.”
- There is no measured effect, and the claim is unusually easy to check against reality — outage data does not cluster around these dates. What survives is the weaker and more useful reading: a period framed as a review phase is a reasonable time to take backups you should be taking anyway.
- “Your ex will come back.”
- This is the prediction-of-events failure mode. The traditional symbolism concerns revisiting and reviewing, which is a description of a mode rather than a forecast of a specific person doing a specific thing. Stated as a prediction it is unfalsifiable when it misses and eerie when it hits, which is exactly why it spreads.
- “Nothing should be signed while Mercury is retrograde.”
- Taken literally this rules out about a fifth of the year, plus the shadow periods, which is most of it. The defensible version is about margin rather than prohibition: if a deadline is flexible and the document is complex, the review framing argues for a second reading rather than for refusing to sign.
What the three claims share is that they convert a statement about timing into a statement about events, which is the move that makes Mercury retrograde feel ominous. Strip it back out and what remains is unremarkable and usable: a recurring stretch of the year that the tradition associates with review. Nothing about that requires anyone to be worried, and a Mercury retrograde page that tries to make you worried has told you more about its business model than about the sky.
How to use these dates without overreading them
Timing, not prophecy
The honest version of retrograde advice is narrower than the popular version, and more useful. A station is a date. What it licenses is a change in your own scheduling — leaving margin, building in a second look, choosing to revisit rather than launch. It does not license a prediction that something will go wrong, and any source that tells you otherwise is selling anxiety rather than timing.
Where the two kinds of advice differ
The distinction shows up clearly in how the two kinds of statement fail. "Leave room to re-read the contract before you sign" costs you twenty minutes if the symbolism means nothing, and saves you a great deal if it means something. "You will have a misunderstanding this week" is either a hit or a miss, teaches you nothing either way, and quietly encourages you to interpret ordinary friction as confirmation. Only one of those is worth organising a calendar around.
Used that way, the shadow dates become the practical part. The pre-shadow is a reasonable prompt to finish or firm up what is already in motion; the retrograde itself suits review, revision and returning to unfinished work; the post-shadow is when things settle rather than when they begin. None of that requires believing anything in particular about planets. It is a scheduling heuristic with dates attached, and the dates are real.
What these dates do not tell you
A calendar of stations is a calendar of one thing. It says nothing about the rest of the sky on those days, nothing about which of them coincide with something else worth noticing, and nothing about your own chart. A period that looks significant here can be entirely unremarkable in a full transit reading, and an unremarkable-looking one can matter a great deal if it lands on a sensitive degree.
That is the reason this page ends by pointing at a chart rather than at a longer horoscope. The dates are universal and free, and they are as far as universal information can honestly take you. Everything past that point depends on where the station falls for you specifically.

These dates are identical for everyone on earth. What differs is where the station lands in your own chart — the same degree can sit on your career angle or in the quiet twelfth house, and that is what decides whether it is worth planning around.
The same minute, two readings
The difference is not subtle. A station on the degree of your Midheaven touches the part of the chart that describes your public work; the same station four degrees earlier might fall in the twelfth house, where the tradition says almost nothing surfaces. Same sky, same minute, two readings that share nothing but the date.
