In short

Astrocartography is a branch of astrology that maps your birth chart's planetary energies onto a world map, revealing the places where each planet's influence is strongest. It shows where you might thrive in love, career, or personal growth — and where life tends to feel harder.

Why Where You Live Changes Your Chart

Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. But the sky looked different depending on where on Earth you were standing — a planet directly overhead in one city sits on the horizon in another. Astrocartography takes that simple fact and turns it into a practical tool: a world map of where each planet's energy is amplified for you.

This matters more than ever. The number of people living outside their country of birth has climbed past 280 million, and remote work has untethered millions more from a fixed location. When you genuinely can live almost anywhere, the question stops being "can I move?" and becomes "where will I do best?" An astrocartography map gives that question an astrological answer.

It will not make decisions for you. But used alongside the practical factors — cost of living, visas, community, climate — it adds a revealing layer: which locations tend to support your relationships, your ambition, your sense of home, or your growth.

What Is Astrocartography?

Astrocartography — also called locational or relocational astrology — was developed by the American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. It projects the planetary positions of your birth chart onto a map of the world, drawing a set of lines that show where each planet was angular (rising, setting, culminating, or anti-culminating) at the moment you were born.

It is easy to confuse astrocartography with a relocated chart. A relocated chart recalculates your entire birth chart for one new city. Astrocartography is the global view: instead of one city, it shows every location at once as a web of planetary lines. Use the map to spot promising regions, then cast a relocated chart to study a specific city in depth.

Crucially, your astrocartography lines depend only on your birth date and time — not your birth place. Your birth city is simply one point plotted on a map that already spans the whole planet.

The Four Angle Lines: AC, MC, DC, IC

Every planet draws four lines on your map, one for each angle of the chart. The angle determines which area of life that planet colors when you are near its line.

LineAngleLife area
ACAscendant (rising)Identity, vitality, how you come across
MCMidheaven (culminating)Career, public life, reputation
DCDescendant (setting)Relationships and close partnerships
ICImum Coeli (anti-culminating)Home, family, roots, inner foundations

On the map, MC and IC lines are straight and vertical — they are meridians of longitude. AC and DC lines are curves, because the horizon bends differently at every latitude.

What Each Planetary Line Means

Each planet carries its own themes. There are no purely "good" or "bad" lines — every planet offers a gift and a challenge. The table below summarizes the ten bodies used on an astrocartography map.

PlanetGiftChallenge
☉ SunConfidence, visibility, vitalityEgo, burnout
☽ MoonEmotional comfort, belongingMoodiness, dependency
☿ MercuryCommunication, learningRestlessness, overthinking
♀ VenusLove, beauty, ease, moneyIndulgence, complacency
♂ MarsDrive, courage, energyConflict, impatience
♃ JupiterGrowth, luck, opportunityExcess, overconfidence
♄ SaturnDiscipline, mastery, structureHardship, isolation
♅ UranusFreedom, innovation, changeInstability, disruption
♆ NeptuneInspiration, spiritualityConfusion, escapism
♇ PlutoTransformation, powerIntensity, upheaval

To interpret a place, combine the planet with the angle. Venus on your DC line points to a location for love and partnership; Jupiter on your MC line favors career luck and recognition; Saturn on your IC line can mean a heavy but grounding home base.

How to Read Your Astrocartography Map in 5 Steps

  1. 1Find your lines. Generate your map above. Each colored line belongs to a planet; the AC/MC/DC/IC label tells you which angle it represents.
  2. 2Look at the angle. Decide which area of life you want to explore — career (MC), love (DC), identity (AC) or home (IC) — and focus on those lines first.
  3. 3Combine planet and angle. Read the planet and angle together. Venus + DC is very different from Mars + DC. The planet sets the tone; the angle sets the arena.
  4. 4Note crossings (parans). Where two planetary lines cross, their energies blend — these spots can be especially powerful or complex.
  5. 5Factor in distance. A line is strongest within roughly 150 km and fades with distance. You do not need to live exactly on a line to feel it.

Distance & Parans: How Strong Is a Line Near You?

A planetary line is not a hard border. Its influence is strongest directly on the line and fades gradually as you move away. As a rough guide:

Distance from lineStrength
Within ~150 kmStrong — clearly felt
150–500 kmModerate — noticeable
500–1000 kmFaint — a background hum

Parans are latitudes where two planetary lines cross. At a crossing, both planets are angular at once, so their themes mix — a Venus–Jupiter paran might bring expansive good fortune in love, for example. On your map, crossings are marked with a gold dot when you switch on "Parans".

Using Your Map to Plan a Move or Trip

Astrocartography is most useful when you treat it as one input among many. If a city sits on your Jupiter or Venus lines, that is a point in its favor — but visit before you commit. Spend a week or two there and notice how you feel; the map describes a tendency, not a guarantee.

The same logic applies to travel. A short trip along a Sun or Venus line can be a wonderful holiday, while a demanding Saturn line might be better suited to a focused work retreat than a relaxing getaway. FAQ

Astrocartography Questions, Answered

Is the astrocartography calculator really free?
Yes. Generating your astrocartography map, viewing all planetary lines, and reading the line data tables are completely free and require no signup. The in-depth, personalized AI reading is part of ChartNova Pro.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For an accurate map, yes. The four angle lines (AC, MC, DC, IC) shift quickly as the Earth rotates — a four-minute error moves a line by about one degree of longitude. An exact birth time gives you reliable lines.
What if I don't know my birth time?
You can still generate a map: we default to noon. But the angle lines will be approximate and are shown as dashed lines with a warning. Treat the map as a rough sketch and regenerate it once you find your birth time on your birth certificate.
Are there "good" and "bad" astrocartography lines?
Not exactly. Every planet offers both a gift and a challenge. A Saturn line can feel heavy but builds discipline and mastery; a Jupiter line brings opportunity but can tip into excess. Context and your own goals decide whether a line helps you.
How far does a planetary line's influence reach?
A line is strongest within roughly 150 km and fades with distance — noticeable to about 500 km, and a faint background influence up to around 1000 km. You don't have to live exactly on a line to feel it.
What is the difference between astrocartography and a relocated chart?
A relocated chart recalculates your whole birth chart for one specific city. Astrocartography is the global view — it shows every location at once as a web of planetary lines. Use the map to find promising regions, then a relocated chart to study a single city in depth.
Can astrocartography tell me where to live?
It can point to locations that tend to support your relationships, career, or growth — but it should be one input among many. Combine it with practical factors like cost of living, visas, and community, and visit a place before committing to a move.
How accurate is ChartNova's astrocartography map?
Planetary positions are computed with the astronomy-engine library at astronomical precision, the same engine used across all ChartNova charts. Line longitudes can be cross-checked against other professional tools and match within a fraction of a degree.
